Downend & Frenchay (formerly Fishponds) Tennis Club was established in 1906 on grass courts at the bottom of Overnhill Road and moved to land adjoining 67 Cleeve Hill in the 1950’s, where it had two floodlit courts. In 2005 the landlord decided not to renew the lease as it was intended to sell the land for redevelopment. In 2011 serious efforts began to find a new home for the Club.
In 2012 Frenchay Cricket Club was identified as a place to relocate and in the spring of 2015 the move was complete. Prior to the works beginning, in 2014 the Club agreed a lease with FCC. Four floodlit courts were built with access and parking rights along with occasional use of the main FCC clubhouse. The Club was fortunate to achieve full funding from grant providers.
It soon became apparent to tennis club members and visitors, a view supported by our landlord, FCC, that a building, specifically for DFTC would be required.
Some shelter and toilets have been our main focus because as a basic requirement, because all we can provide, and only when suitable ground conditions allow, is the hire of a portaloo.
It has been noted that a club facility would help retain some members, as it will provide a hub and a social space.
So in 2018/19 the club began looking into the feasibility of a small club build. The architect, Jonathan Platt, from gcp architects was instructed, planning approval granted January 2020, and grant sources investigated. The project has been subject to several delays causing the planning approval to become lapsed, but has since been resubmitted.
The Club has been fortunate, in that since submitting an application for consideration, for this recent Scholars Chase section 106-community facilities grant, it has been granted a substantial award. With grants awarded by Enovert trust and the previous section 106, Frenchay Hospital development, along with a contribution from our club savings, we anticipate being in a position to go ahead, subject to planning approval.
DFTC look forward to welcoming new members to the Club, at anytime, and there is something for all ages and abilities!
